J. Scott Griswold

Biography

After graduating from the University of Tennessee College of Law, Scott began his career clerking for Chief Justice William M. Barker of the Tennessee Supreme Court. During his clerkship, Scott researched a wide variety of complex issues and assisted with drafting opinions. Once he completed his clerkship, Scott joined Paine, Tarwater, and Bickers in September of 2008 as an associate. During his time with the firm, he has devoted a significant portion of his practice to defending clients involved in product liability cases across the country. He has gained in-depth experience concerning expert witnesses and discovery management in multiple jurisdictions. Furthermore, Scott has handled cases involving consumer protection claims, challenges to trusts and estates, and lawsuits against health care providers. Scott has also garnered considerable experience in representing clients on appeal before the Tennessee Court of Appeals and the Tennessee Supreme Court. His most noteworthy case came as a result of being appointed by the Tennessee Supreme Court to represent an indigent defendant on appeal. Scott successfully argued before the Court, and his efforts resulted in a unanimous opinion in favor of the client.

Scott has written extensively on a number of diverse issues for legal journals, including the Fordham Journal on Corporate and Financial Law, Transactions: Tennessee Journal of Business, the Tennessee Bar Journal, and the Knoxville Bar Association journal. Believing that community service is an integral part of practicing law, Scott devotes a great deal of his time to various programs in the community. He serves on the board of directors of a local history museum, is a member of both Nucleus Knoxville and the Knoxville Estate Planning Council, works with the local bar association's publication committee and young lawyer division and often speaks on panels at the University of Tennessee College of Law. Scott has also given a substantial amount of his time to representing clients pro bono. In recognition of his volunteerism, the Tennessee Bar Association awarded Scott the 2010 Harris A. Gilbert Volunteer Attorney of the Year Award.
